The Dolomites change completely with the seasons. The same meadow can be covered in wildflowers in June, glowing gold in October and buried in snow in January. There is no wrong time to elope here, but each season asks for a slightly different plan. This is what to expect, month by month, from behind the camera in these mountains.
The short answer
- Best overall: June to mid-July, and late September to mid-October.
- Busiest: mid-July to the end of August.
- Quietest, with fewer services: November and April to May.
- For snow: December to March.
- Best time of day, all year: sunrise.
June to mid-July: wildflowers and long days
The meadows turn green and bloom with buttercups, gentians and alpine roses, the lakes are thawed and the summer lifts and huts open, usually from early or mid-June. Days are long, so sunrise is very early, around 5:20 in late June, and the light stays soft for a long time in the evening. It is one of my two favourite windows.
Good to know: in early June, snow can still linger on the highest passes and paths.
Mid-July to August: summer at its fullest
Warm days, everything open, and the busiest weeks of the year. Famous places are crowded from mid-morning, some roads have daytime access limits, and thunderstorms often build in the afternoon. A sunrise ceremony avoids all three. Choose a quieter pass or meadow and keep the afternoon free for a relaxed picnic or a hut lunch.
September: calm and stable
After the summer holidays the crowds thin, the weather is often at its most stable and the mornings get crisp. Sunrise moves to around 6:40 at the start of the month, which makes early starts easier. Most lifts run until the end of September or into October.
Late September to mid-October: golden larches
My other favourite window. The larches turn gold, usually from late September to mid or late October, the air is clear and the first snow often dusts the peaks while the valleys are still green and gold. It is quieter than summer and the colours are extraordinary, as in this autumn session at Lago di Braies. Sunrise is around 7:20 by mid-October.
Good to know: many lifts and huts close in the second half of October, so check the dates for your place.
November and spring: the in-between seasons
In November and from April to May, most lifts and many huts are closed while the ski season has ended or not yet begun. Valleys can be beautiful and completely quiet, but high places are harder to reach and snow can arrive at any time. These months suit couples who want solitude and are flexible with the place.
December to March: snow and winter light
A winter elopement feels like a fairytale: snowy peaks, frozen lakes and warm huts. Ski lifts make some high places easy to reach, and the low winter sun gives soft light all day. Days are short and mornings are very cold, so we plan warm layers, a place to warm up and a shorter time outside.
Weather: plan for change
In any season, mountain weather can change within an hour. I always plan a backup place and, where possible, a flexible time or day. Fog, rain and dramatic clouds often make the most beautiful photos, so a grey forecast is rarely a reason to cancel. On the day, we decide together, early enough to keep it relaxed.
Planning ahead
For June, September and early October, reaching out six to twelve months ahead gives you the most choice. For the complete planning steps, read how to elope in the Dolomites, and for places, the best elopement locations in the Dolomites. Ready to talk about dates? Send me a message.
